Tryssaria was born to Lunestra and Beran Aril on Betazed. She was a quiet child; more interested in her books than her siblings. Her parents showered her with love and affection but she was far more…plain…than her mother. Where Lunestra was color and fire, Trysarria was far more black and white and she hated being in crowds. Partly it was because of her telepathic and empathic abilities but mostly it was just Tryssaria being herself. She didn’t like the attention her mother’s loud laugh and sparkling personality seemed to bring. She was the third child born to the couple and the youngest. Her elder siblings were quite normal and seemed to thrive in the chaos and love of an interconnected planet.
Tryssaria was very successful in school and she worked incredibly hard to achieve good grades and adequate mental control. Indeed, she had no problems with computers or learning the in-depth calculations for mathematics and physics….the calculations to make a friend were far more difficult. She didn’t really even have an excuse. There WERE other geeks and nerds in her classes and everyone struggled with their abilities. There were even other shy children in the class and she could have made the attempt to get to know one of them. There was just something inside of her that loved solitude. As she grew older, she started to lose some of that but it was too late.
Her parents bonded her to her husband, as was traditional, as a child. His name was Lyrd and they should have gotten along. However, her quiet ways and the nervous stutter made Lyrd regard her with disdain that he couldn’t quite hide from her empathy. The two of them never quite clicked and after a rather hostile meeting with Lyrd, she told her parents that she was leaving for StarFleet.
The news was met with disbelief. Tryssaria was smart and had not told her parents of the plan until she had gotten a sponsor and been accepted on the strength of her stem skills. She stuttered her way through the explanation and her mother’s hurt pounded away at her confidence until she almost gave in. But her mother’s histrionics also served one useful purpose; her father saw how much Tryssarria was overshadowed by her mother’s emotions and that of her siblings. He stopped his wife in mid-rant and took his daughters hands. Carefully, he agreed that she needed to see if this was the path for her. It was the best decision of her life.
While Starfleet was yet another school, Tryssaria soaked every bit of information up like a sponge. She flourished under the academic pressure; unless she had to speak publicly. Her instructors worried about her inability to effectively communicate but they didn’t know the secret that Tryssaria had hidden from her parents. Her betrothed hated her. He had told her so in so many words and she heard the ring of truth in them. Truth was a powerful tool for both good and ill. She vowed to never hurt another through the truth of her words; silence was best for someone who didn’t trust themselves.
She made a few friends in the academy but they have mostly been separated as they went to different ships. Her best friend, Chloe, was the bad influence that led to Tryssaria actually going on a date or two and even one party. Although Tryssaria DID leave early because she was uncomfortable with all of the physical displays of affection. She kicked herself all the way home for being such a prude but the couples were enthusiastic and Tryssaria wasn’t immune to the desire for intimacy.
She graduated with top scores in math and engineering but was warned that her social skills would need work if she were going to be an officer. She is eager to prove herself on the Enterprise and just wishes the soft voice that whispers in her head would go away. Computers don’t talk. They don’t whisper their secrets to a NORMAL betazoid. But then….she has never been normal.
Tryssaria is quiet and reserved but also very smart. She has worked hard to graduate Starfleet and wants to do her best at starting a new life. She doesn’t make friends easily but the one or two she made in Starfleet still talk to her every day. It was a strange new world at the academy and one where she thrived. She still wishes things could have been different with her fiancé but she’s never trusted herself to any other man and wonders if she ever will.
She talks to her mother and father occasionally but the strained voices are not the ones she grew up with and she fears that things will never be the same with them. It especially pains her to see her mother because the gregarious and cheerful personality she hated as a child is still there…but never for her. Her siblings never quite know what to do with their quiet, serious sister in her uniform and with the stutter that never quite goes away but they have slowly begun to warm to her again.
