That's what Freya was frantically after. And it couldn't just be any sort of coffee either, she discovered. Commander McCoy liked it a certain way, and well... it took her forever and a day to realize it. But so far, she liked to think that she was getting it right. That was... until today.
Looking at the coffee, she frowned. "This isn't right." She was quick to point out, looking to the man who had handed it to her. If it wasn't right there would be hell to pay and it certainly wouldn't be the young officer preparing each and every fresh pot of coffee.
"I need it straight black. I never asked for milk or sugar." There was a bit of muttering under her breath but she handed the cup back.
Looking to the chronometer, Freya tapped her foot. Hoping that this predicament didn't cause her to be late for work. But unfortunately, she knew that it probably would.
Once the coffee was fixed, hot and all black she took the cup and turned quickly around but as she did so Freya hadn't been paying attention and actually slammed into someone causing the new cup of coffee, the very same cup of coffee intended for her boss to end up all over the officer she bumped into.
Eyes went wide as Freya stared in horror. "Oh, my God! I'm so sorry!"
M’Benga was going to be late to work, but he didn’t care. He wanted something to eat first. Maybe some salad or quinoa. Yes, quinoa salad. Honestly, he would take whatever he could get his hands on – as long as it didn’t have meat in it. The last time he had eaten meat was on a dare with his boss, McCoy, and things didn’t end well. For either man. They both ended up extremely sick with Alice as the intermediary trying to bust their heads together so they realized they were being stupid. Detoxing back from eating meat was the best thing he had ever done and he was not about to turn back around and have another bite of it.
Even smelling the sizzling bacon made his stomach turn a bit.
The chef saw him coming and gestured at a vegetarian plate already created. He wasn’t the only vegetarian on board, so it was a good thing the chef was prepared for him, Spock, and whomever else might benefit from avoiding meat. Jabilo took a step towards the station when a brunette woman hurriedly turned towards him. Before he could react and step out of her path, the poor doctor was covered in coffee. Piping HOT coffee. His voice box unintentionally emitted a small squeak of surprise before he cleared his throat. This is not how he saw today happening. Now he’d have to change. And possibly … yeah, that did burn a bit.
Pinching the tunic to pull it away from his torso a bit, the doctor furrowed his brow. He wasn’t mad, he was just surprised. “It is quite alright,” Jabilo finally breathed. Judging by the way things felt, just minor first degree burns at worst. Nothing a quick change and some topical ointment couldn’t fix. No need to mention it to McCoy … McCoy. Wait. This was Freya! Which meant this coffee was for … shit. Turning back towards the man who had handed her the coffee, Jabilo narrowed his eyes slightly and took a more commanding tone, “Get her another cup, stat.”
He recognized her, but wasn’t sure if she recognized him. “We will tell him it was my fault. That way McCoy cannot be too mad at you, he will just blame me. Which is fine,” Jabilo shrugged, still holding his tunic away from him because that coffee was quite hot.
Freya wasn't sure what to think of how her shift was going. But now that she'd bumped into someone and spilled very hot coffee on them, it was just getting worse. Eyes looked up to see one of the doctors that worked in sickbay.
"I'm so sorry Lieutenant," Freya meant every word of it. She hadn't had much if any interaction with the male, as she was always running around doing this or that for the Commander McCoy. But that still didn't make this right. It was her mistake and she was bound and determined to correct it. That was until he looked right at the man that had prepared the second cup of coffee, demanding that another be made.
The woman sighed. "Doesn't matter to his Royal Highness," Freya stated, flatly. Clearly not happy with the fact that she was going to be faced with a very angry boss. "It's not right that you take the blame when it's my fault. Besides, you'd think he'd be smart and get his wife to make his coffee for him, Though there was a part of her that wondered if the other woman had the same issues getting things just right in regard to McCoy.
But what Freya was concerned with was not only her own skin but making sure that this innocent doctor in her presence stayed out of trouble.
Standing there covered in coffee was not exactly Jabilo’s idea of how best to start his day. But it was a simple accident. He should have been watching where he was going. After all, he was hungry and distracted by the smells of whatever the chef had whipped up for the vegetarian breakfast. He wouldn’t necessarily be late to work. At least, he wasn’t planning on being late until he was doused in coffee. Now, though, now he would certainly be on the late side for work. It didn’t matter to him because he was not easily intimidated by their leader.
Sure, McCoy liked to run a tight ship, but Jabilo saw a different side of him. He could be a fun guy to hang around. Maybe Jabilo was being a little cavalier here, but he could be a little late to work if necessary. And it was necessary. He probably could just go straight to Sickbay and find a tunic to change into in his locker there, but it might be easier just to go back to his room. He wasn’t sure which to do at the moment, other than just trying to calm Freya down first. McCoy really did have a way of working everyone into a tizzy.
“I said it was fine, Petty Officer,” he hated using ranks, but since she had done so, he would respond in kind. “And you can call me Doctor M’Benga. Or Jabilo, if you want,” he flashed her a smile, not trying to be flirtatious or anything (although sometimes it accidentally came off as such). “I should have watched where I was going and I will explain the situation to McCoy as soon as we bring him his coffee,” he told her, deciding to opt for going straight to Sickbay and taking care of things there. “He will just have to understand,” Jabilo started, trailing off as she mentioned Alice should be getting the good doctor coffee.
It was a good thing that Jabilo was lending her a sympathetic ear. If Alice or Bones had heard a remark like that? Pfft. Not good. “I would recommend you don’t make comments like that. She’s got a strong head on her shoulders and … she is a very independent woman,” Jabilo realized he was backing himself into a corner rather quickly and inadvertently dropped the hot, wet tunic back onto his stomach as he put his hands up in surrender, “Not to say that you are not also independ-ssssss!” He hissed and pinched the tunic again, not wanting to pull it off fully until he had a bit more privacy. Despite wearing his black undershirt, Jabilo was not in the habit of stripping in the middle of a crowd.
The guy with the coffee was finally handing the third cup to Freya. Hopefully third and last.
Freya decided that it was most likely better to relent than to continue on the path that she was with the doctor. He would be fine as soon as he could change his uniform, that was all. "Yes, sir." She finally said, standing there awkwardly she smiled when he told her to call him by his first name. It wasn't every day that she was allowed to do that while they were on duty, so she wasn't going to disappoint him. "Jabilo it is then," Though, honestly, she still felt awkward about it.
Giving him a bit of a look, Freya decided to remain silent on that. She knew how McCoy could be, most everyone did. But it seemed that she was still not learning from her mistakes completely. "I hope hie does..." Was all that she'd say to that. Her voice giving way to the fact that she didn't entirely believe that at all.
Her eyes went wide as she listened to Jabilo defend Alice. "Sorry... I didn't realize. I really don't interact with her much. I just assumed you know... that she was some sort of airhead." Strike two, Freya knew. Alice was in a higher position than her, nevermind the fact of what she was to the man she brought coffee to.
But when she was handed another cup of coffee, she took it and checked to make sure that it was correct before looking back to the doctor. "Third times a charm, right?"

Turn your face towards the sun. Let the shadows fall behind you. Tell a prayer, just carry on And the shadows will never find you. Lost in the rock and roll. Got lost in a promise of a love I never know. Shadows chase me far from home. I remember when my heart was filled with gold. And you know I've been burned, I've been burned, I've been burned. You see me lose control. It's not worth, It's not worth, It's not worth My soul.
